STOP! Surface Prep Differences When Coating Raw vs. Painted Surfaces
Share
It is no secret that Dyna-Tek’s hydrophobic clear coatings can provide a non-stick finish for previously painted, anodized and other surface finishes. When doing so, cleaning the existing surface is always recommended.
That said, solvent cleaners that work on raw metal substrates can be too aggressive on painted surfaces. So, always test the cleaner you are using on a small spot before assuming it won’t hurt the finish you are trying to PROTECT.
The STOP sign shown was cleaned with Dyna-Tek’s Dyna-Prep (aka Tert-Butyl Acetate). Dyna-Prep is an excellent raw metal cleaner, but for this STOP sign, it was too aggressive.
For more information on Dyna-Prep, please see “Is Goo Gone™ an Acceptable Cleaner for Use Before Applying Dyna-SlickShield on Tooling” for more information.
To get around this unpleasant result, less aggressive solvents such as Isopropyl Alcohol or simply soap and water (be sure to rinse thoroughly and completely dry) would be fine.
Dyna-Tek’s coatings can be applied over thermoset powder coatings, thermoplastic coatings (such as Nylon 11), and most plating finishes to enhance their chemical and environmental corrosion-resistance as well as giving them easy clean, non-stick surfaces… just be sure to test your cleaner first.
